Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Powerful Tool for Healing and Autoimmune Support

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is steadily gaining recognition in the health and wellness community, though many people are still unfamiliar with it. While originally reserved for divers and certain critical medical conditions, it is now accessible in clinics, gyms, and even homes. I personally have a hyperbaric chamber in my own home, and I’ve seen first-hand how transformative it can be—both for my own health and for patients dealing with complex autoimmune challenges.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing concentrated oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. Under normal conditions, we breathe air that’s about 21% oxygen. In a hyperbaric chamber, oxygen is delivered at 100% purity, with atmospheric pressure elevated to two or three times higher than usual. This combination pushes oxygen deep into blood plasma, spinal fluid, bone marrow, and tissues—reaching areas of the body that may otherwise be starved of adequate oxygen and enabling repair and regeneration.

Types of Hyperbaric Chambers

  • Monoplace chambers: A single patient lies inside a clear, tube-like chamber while breathing pure oxygen under pressure. These are commonly found in wellness centers.
  • Multiplace chambers: Larger, hospital-based chambers where multiple patients can sit or recline while receiving oxygen via a mask or hood. A technician stays inside to monitor patients directly.
  • Soft (mild) chambers: Made of durable fabric materials, these are more affordable and convenient for home use. They don’t provide 100% oxygen but still increase pressure, which may still offer benefits, though typically less than hard chambers.

FDA-Approved Uses for HBOT

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration currently recognizes HBOT as a treatment for 13 medical conditions, including:

  • Decompression sickness (the “bends”)
  • Air or gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
    (including combined cyanide poisoning)
  • Crush injuries and compartment syndrome
  • Gas gangrene
  • Severe anemia or blood loss
  • Non-healing or necrotizing wounds
  • Osteomyelitis that resists other treatments
  • Delayed radiation injury to soft tissue or bone
  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Thermal burns
  • Intracranial abscesses

While these conditions are officially approved, research shows HBOT has potential far beyond this list. Many practitioners successfully use it for “off-label” applications in chronic illness and integrative care.

Off-Label Benefits and Applications

Neurological Health and Brain Injuries

HBOT improves oxygen delivery and stimulates new blood vessel and nerve growth, making it helpful in recovery from strokes, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and traumatic brain injuries.

Research has also found HBOT to support children with autism, with improvements reported in communication, sensory processing, and social interaction.

Chronic Infections and Lyme Disease

Because many harmful microbes thrive in low-oxygen environments, HBOT can be an effective supportive treatment. It enhances the body’s immune defenses, improves white blood cell activity, and may be especially valuable in difficult-to-treat infections like Lyme disease.

Mold and Mycotoxin Exposure

Mold-related illness, especially in those genetically predisposed to chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS), often involves brain fog and cognitive decline. Studies suggest HBOT helps reduce inflammation and restore brain function in these cases.

Autoimmune Disorders

Evidence supports the use of HBOT in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, Crohn’s disease, lupus, Raynaud’s, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. In practice, I’ve seen patients with severe autoimmune limitations regain mobility, while others have experienced resolution of stubborn symptoms such as psoriasis after undergoing a series of HBOT sessions.

How HBOT Sessions Work

Preparing for Treatment

  • Change into scrubs or gowns (to reduce flammable risk)
  • Remove jewelry and personal items
  • Inform staff of any ear, sinus, or respiratory issues
  • Use the restroom before entering, as sessions last 60-120 minutes

Inside the Chamber

  1. Entry: Patients recline in the chamber (or sit in a group chamber).
  2. Pressurization: Pressure rises to 1.5-3 times normal, often causing a sensation in the ears similar to air travel.
  3. Oxygen Breathing: Depending on chamber type, you’ll breathe pure oxygen directly or through a mask.
  4. Relaxation: You may read, nap, or listen to music while being monitored.
  5. Decompression: Pressure is slowly normalized before exiting the chamber.

Why It Works for Autoimmunity

  • 1. Reduces Inflammation : Autoimmune diseases are driven by uncontrolled inflammation. HBOT delivers oxygen deep into tissues, lowering inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and cytokines—sometimes more effectively than steroids.
  • 2. Fights Infections : Oxygen-rich environments are hostile to bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. HBOT strengthens immune defense by enhancing white blood cell function and supporting microbial clearance.
  • 3. Repairs and Regenerates Tissue : Since autoimmunity often damages the body’s own tissues, oxygen plays a vital role in cellular repair. HBOT stimulates blood vessel growth and accelerates tissue regeneration, helping restore function over time.

Safety and Considerations

While generally safe, HBOT isn’t without risks. Side effects may include ear or sinus pressure, claustrophobia, or (rarely) oxygen toxicity or lung issues. Contraindications include recent ear surgery, severe COPD, fever, or pregnancy. Always consult a trained healthcare provider before beginning therapy.

Final Thoughts

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is no longer just for divers or hospital emergencies. It’s an accessible and powerful option for those seeking to reduce inflammation, fight infection, and repair tissue damage—especially when conventional approaches have only gone so far. Whether used for chronic illness, neurological recovery, or autoimmune support, HBOT offers a promising path toward deeper healing and overall wellness.
